Science Makes Its First Acquisition: Pinpuff, A Klout For Pinterest That Measures ‘Pinfluence’

Science, the eight-month-old LA-based technology incubator / studio that brought us the Dollar Shave Club and most recently e-commerce site Uncovet, is making its first acquisition: it is buying Pinpuff, a fast-growing "Klout for Pinterest" that measures and tracks the influence of Pinterest users -- "Pinfluence" in Pinpuff parlance -- that was launched only in February of this year. The deal is yet another a sign of how the ability to curate and mine social media information can be considered as important as the social media platforms themselves. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Mike Jones, the CEO of Science, says that the acquisition will be used to help build out other businesses in Science's portfolio, using Pinpuff's social know-how to extend growth virally. It will work in conjunction with its existing in-house agency HelloSociety. "Part of our strategy here at Science is to build services and tools that assist influencers in building their audiences, and eventually ...

Google Makes Its Customizable Apps Admin Console Available To All Customers

Today, Google announced the eventual rollout of a brand new look for its Admin Console, an area that only admins of Google Apps will see. The aim of the redesign is to help those admins get to information quicker, manage user accounts easier and keep their company running as smooth as possible. The company boasts that “millions” of businesses, schools and government agencies are using Google Apps, so making sure that the Admin Console is as easy to use as possible is key to getting buy-in. According to the Admin Console FAQ, this new look has been available for new users as of April 17th, but this announcement signals the invitation to all customers. Some of the things being introduced to the Admin Console, which rolls out in a few weeks, are a universal search bar, new usage and activity stats at a glance, some bulk user actions and a customizable dashboard. AOL's Video Hat Trick: A Slate Of Original Content, Be On Creative Studio, And A Deal With FreeWheel + Mediaocean For Multiscreen Ad Buys

Online video is booming, and today AOL (owner of TechCrunch) unveiled three new initiatives that spell out how it plans to tackle it: 15 original, unscripted shows; a new creative studio, Be On, to create branded videos; and a deal with FreeWheel and Mediaocean to add in AOL’s video inventory to its platform, so that media buyers looking for multiscreen investments across TV and online video can include AOL in the mix. The news was unveiled at the company’s 2013 Digital Content NewFront event, the upfront event where AOL presents its strategy for the year ahead to key advertisers and agencies. The slate of content is not AOL’s move into Netflix-style dramas (for now, at least). Instead, it plays on the network of sites that AOL already owns in the news and information space, which also includes other tech sites like Engadget as well as the Huffington Post. Up to now the AOL On network, the video network that AOL launched last year to span all of those sites and more (the videos go ...

42 Is The Answer To Everything…In Personalized Analytics For Retail

An online retailer platform called simply “42” is debuting today at TechCrunch Disrupt NY with new ideas about how to bring the intelligence of online e-commerce tools to brick-and-mortar merchants. The B2B platform provides businesses and brands a way to better connect and personalize their interactions with customers, as well as to gain broader insight into consumer buying patterns, customer loyalty, and more. The company was founded just this February by a team which includes Cathy Han, formerly of Procter & Gamble, and Nick Porter, previously of mobile customer engagement solutions provider Benbria. There are two part-time co-founders involved as well: Lucas Lemanowicz of Palantir and Sarah Hum of Google. Han explains that the inspiration for building 42 – which, yes, is a nod to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - arose from her work at P&G, whose clients include several large retailers. “My job was to look at the data, and look at where the gaps in their businesses were. ...
