Uber CEO Kalanick Denies Pitching Investors For Funding At A $1B Valuation
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick said that he hasn’t spoken to investors in a year and half about raising capital, denying reports that the company is raising funding at a $1 billion valuation. Reuters reported that story earlier today, citing one source. We had heard similar rumors over the past few weeks but they weren’t substantiated enough to report. That said, just because Kalanick isn’t speaking to investors about raising money, that doesn’t mean that VCs or private equity firms aren’t courting him to take their money. The company, which pioneered on-demand taxi and black cab rides directly from your mobile phone, has raised nearly $50 million to date. The most recent $37 million round was led by Menlo Ventures, which aggressively outbid other competitors on valuation to win the deal. Bill Gurley, a general partner at Benchmark Capital, which came in on Uber’s Series A round, said the company is growing faster than eBay. Craigslist Slowly Expands Its Maps To Items For Sale, Starting First With Yard Sales And Flea Markets
Craigslist has started to add maps to its sales listings, letting people view not just what items are being sold, but where those items are located on a map. Craigslist appears to be starting off with group events — garage sales, yard sales and flea markets — in a move that extends a feature Craigslist first introduced in October for apartment rentals. As with the apartments move — made just as Craigslist was tightening the legal screws on sites like PadMapper for repurposing its data in their own housing listings — the maps on sale items raises Craigslist’s competitive edge. In this case, it puts Craigslist into closer feature proximity (pun intended) with startups like Zaarly and Yardsale, which focus on location-based e-commerce from small merchants and sole traders, but also bigger fish like eBay, which also lets buyers view listings based on distance from a specified location. Focusing first on yard sales makes sense since people seek these out often based on their location. ...

eBay’s RedLaser Takes On Shopkick; Adds Geofencing And Deals With Best Buy To Barcode Scanning App
eBay is entering the territory of mobile shopping app Shopkick with the latest update in the e-commerce giant's barcode scanning app, RedLaser. Today, eBay is adding geofencing to its RedLaser application and partnering with BestBuy to allow users to see special offers, browse open-stock items, and view items relevant to them right when they step into one of the electronics retailer's 1,100 locations. You can download the new version of the app here. For background, eBay acquired the barcode scanning mobile apps (iOS and Android) from Occipital in June 2010. The basic technology allows users to comparison shop on the go. Anyone can scan a barcode on an item at a store and then automatically access any eBay listings and local availability (courtesy of Milo) of the product on the marketplace. Sellers can also use the scanning technology to scan and item and list the product in very little time. RedLaser’s technology has also been integrated into eBay’s dedicated iPhone and Android apps. ...
