Zoobean Grabs $500K From Kapor Capital & Others For Its Handpicked Kids' Books Subscription Service & Online Shop

A number of startups have been trying their hand at subscription-based children’s books services, or something like a “Netflix for kids’ books,” so to speak. Today, another entry called Zoobean joins the flock, with the debut of its own handpicked catalog which parents can either subscribe to, or choose to just shop online like a standard e-commerce website. The company was co-founded by Jordan Llyod Bookey, Google’s head of K-12 Education Outreach, and her husband Felix Brandon Lloyd, who is a former Washington, D.C. Teacher of the Year. Like the founders of similar services in this space, including the recently launched Sproutkin and The Little Book Club, for example, the founders are also parents themselves. “About a year ago, when our daughter was born, we were looking for a book for our son that would help him understand what it would mean to be a big brother. And in this particular case – we’re a multi-racial family – we were looking for something that might have ...

Zhuang Zedong dies at 72; helped get 'ping-pong diplomacy' rolling

Chinese table tennis champion broke the ice with Americans in 1971 after decades of Cold War tensions with an act of friendliness. Whether spontaneous or meticulously planned, it changed history. It might have been a chance meeting or a cunning act of propaganda, but the encounter more than 40 years ago between two ping-pong champions — one Chinese, the other American — launched what President Nixon would call "the week that changed the world."

Translation is UX

Je ne suis pas monsieur Lebowski. C’est vous monsieur Lebowski. Moi, je suis le Duc. — The Big Lebowski , French version There is a world where Harry Potter’s arch enemy is “Du-weißt-schon-wer,” Facebook users click the “Me gusta” button, and the Dude is named “le Duc.” This world is a translated world. We—the people who make websites—now study almost every aspect of our trade, from content and usability to art direction and typography. Our attention to detail has never been greater as we strive to provide the best possible experience. Yet many users still experience products that lack personality or are difficult to understand. They are users of a translated version. When we pledge to embrace the adaptable nature of the web—to make our websites responsive and even future-ready—we’re typically talking about diversity of devices. But the web’s diversity also comes in the form of different languages and cultures. Translation affects users’ experiences—and ...

Counterfeit Air Bag Racket Blows Up

Hugh Pickens writes "According to Joan Lowy of the Associated Press, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has alerted the auto repair industry that tens of thousands of car owners may be driving vehicles with counterfeit air bags, which fail to inflate properly or don't inflate at all. Although no deaths or injuries have been tied to the counterfeit bags, it's unclear whether police accident investigators would be able to identify a counterfeit bag from a genuine one. The counterfeit bags typically have been made to look like air bags from automakers, and usually include a manufacturer's logo, but government investigators believe many of the bags come from China. Auto dealerships that operate their own body shops are usually required by their franchise agreements to buy their parts, including air bags, directly from automakers and therefore are unlikely to have installed counterfeit bags. But only 37 percent of auto dealers have their own body shops, so many consumers whose ...
