Open Compute Project To Develop A Network Switch, A First-Of-Its-Kind Open Source Project
Open Compute will develop a specification and a reference box for an open, networking switch and will do it from the ground up in the fashion of open-source software efforts such as those developed by the Apache Foundation. The OS-agnostic, top-of-rack switch will be the first developed as an open-source project with the spec developed by the Open Compute community. “Closesd switches are still the primary way things work,” said Frank Frankovsky in an interview this week. Frankovsky is a Facebook vice president in hardware design and supply operations, who plays the focal role at Open Compute. “…Networking has always had a black box nature to it. You give it a packet and it gives it back on the other end.” According to a blog post by Frankovsky, Najam Ahmad, who runs the network engineering team at Facebook, will lead the networking project. The Open Networking Foundation and OpenDaylight group will participate with Broadcomm, Intel, VMware, and Cumulus Networks . Work ...

Game Closure "DevKit" For Mobile HTML5 Games Is Open Source
First time accepted submitter Chris Taylor writes "Silicon Valley startup Game Closure has open-sourced their HTML5 game development toolkit. The trailer video showcases some interesting new technology. It allows game developers to write code in JavaScript on Windows, Mac and Linux desktops to rapidly create and then deploy new games on the Internet, Android, and on iOS cellphones. The source code for the entire stack is available on GitHub, including the changes to Google V8 and Mozilla SpiderMonkey."

Linux, Apache, Perl, X10, Webcams... and Christmas Lights
An anonymous reader writes "Clement Moore writes 'Twas the night before Christmas, and while not a creature was stirring (not even an optical mouse), /.'ers were posting & moderating with squeals of delight. When out on the Internet there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my keyboard to see what was the matter. I knew in a moment it must be Alek's Controllable Christmas Lights Webcam. But remembered in previous years it was a hoax - /. said damn. And then, in a twinkling, I realize Alek has done it for real — W'OH! With 20,000 lights plus giant inflatable Elmo, Frosty, Santa, SpongeBob, and Homer Simpson — D'OH! The X10 controls and 3 live webcams provide such clarity, that it has raised over $70,000 for Celiac charity. 'Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!'"

Dell Has A New Platform As A Service That Actually Makes Sense
Dell has a new platform as a service (PaaS) and it actually makes sense. The service is called Project Fast PaaS, part of the new Dell Cloud Labs, which also includes Project Sputnik, the Linux laptop for developers and Crowbar, the open-source cloud deployment framework that Dell originally created to support its “OpenStack- and Hadoop-powered offerings.” FastPaaS and the new Dell Cloud Labs reflects a paradox that I felt all week at Dell World. Fast PaaS represents the innovation happening at Dell. But like any big enterprise company, it is dependent on making big deals with high margins that serve the basic demands of large enterprises. On Tuesday, I moderated a think tank discussion that unfortunately was stacked with Dell managers. One customer attended. To my fault, a few Dell managers took control of the conversation at certain points, which was unfortunate. But they did express some perspectives that reflect the real conflict at Dell these days. Michael Coté summed ...

Popular Android ROM Accused of GPL Violation
An anonymous reader writes "A petition has recently been started to get the developer of the popular Android 'MIUI' ROM, Chinese based Xiaomi, to comply with the GPL. While Android itself is licensed under the Apache 2.0 License, and therefore does not actually require derivative works to be FOSS, the Linux kernel itself is GPL-licensed and needs to remain open. Unless Xiaomi intends to develop a replacement for the Linux kernel, they need to make their modifications public."
