Hon Hai Looks Toward Indonesia's Promising Economy As Apple's Growth Slows
Hon Hai is planning to diversify its business away from producing Apple devices by signing an agreement with Indonesia to make and sell handsets in that country, reports Reuters. A Hon Hai spokesman said that the company, which derives about 60 to 70 percent of its revenue from manufacturing work for Apple, hopes to sign the agreement next month. Hon Hai, the parent company of Foxconn, is one of Apple’s largest suppliers. The Taiwanese company joins other manufacturers looking to make their business less dependent on Apple contracts as the Cupertino company’s growth slows. Earlier this month, Hon Hai reported a 19 percent in 1Q sales, due in large part to falling demand for iPhones. Another heavily Apple-dependent manufacturer, Cirrus Logic, has said that it is trying to diversify its customer base and is now shipping to several mobile phone manufacturers. Woz Says iPhone Features Are 'Behind'
redletterdave writes "The iPhone may be one of the bestselling smartphones on the planet, but Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak believes Apple's flagship smartphone has fallen behind its competitors, namely those built by Samsung, when it comes to smartphone features. Speaking at Businessweek's Best Brand Awards on Thursday evening, Wozniak said he was proud of how loyal Apple fans were to the iPhone, but also said 'this loyalty is not given,' shortly before denouncing his own company's smartphone. 'Currently we are, in my opinion, somewhat behind with features in the smartphone business,' Wozniak said. 'Others have caught up. Samsung is a big competitor. But precisely because they are currently making great products.'" I prefer Android, but it seems hard to find iPhone users who aren't enthusiastic about it. Kantar: iPhones Top Seller In U.S., Japan; Android Winning Everywhere Else; Windows Phone Growing Most In Europe
Android smartphones, led by Samsung, were the overall winner in the crucial holiday sales period at the end of last year, although Apple's iPhone continues to shine in the U.S. as well as Japan, according to the latest numbers out from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, a division of WPP that tracks handset sales in a number of key markets over a rolling, 12-week period. It also found that while handsets built on Microsoft's Windows Phone OS continue to struggle in markets like the U.S., they are showing small signs of growth in Europe -- although we're still talking about single-digit percentages in almost all cases.

I’m Bored. What’s Next?
It’s just about 2013 and I gotta say, I’m a little bored. At least, the blogger in me is. As an investor things are just peachy. All this panic about overpriced consumer startups has led to a nice softening of the market (periodic reports of Blubbles are great for that). And other sectors, like business to business, is still under capitalized v. the consumer sector. But as a consumer and observer of tech, things feel very 2002ish to me. There’s been a lot of belt tightening, for example, as many startups are trying to make their seed rounds stretch just a little bit longer. But it’s more than that. I just don’t see the tons of crazy new ideas that I did a few years ago. Things that are genuinely new and interesting. Yeah, yeah, mobile. I get it. Everything’s mobile these days. LET’S GO MO-BILE! But really that’s just an IQ test. When you see bold new startups with nothing but a desktop strategy you know they just don’t get it and you move on. But really a lot of the mobile ...

Hotel Tonight Faces An Attack Of The Last-Minute-Hotel-App Clones In Europe
There's been a rash of mobile apps offering last-minute deals on hotels, for booking on the same day. Perhaps one of the best known is HotelTonight out of the US, which has recently pushed into European markets. But the going is poised to get a little tougher with several similar businesses appearing ever frequently. Launching this week in the UK and Ireland, the Hot Hotels app allows owners to search for and book hotel rooms at extremely short notice when plans change, in the Hotel Tonight model. Rooms can be booked as late as 3am and the app is available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.
