6 Experts on Speeding Up Data

Speed. That’s what it’s all about these days. The problem: it’s still more effective to use FedEx than trying to squeeze a data load across a network. It’s an absurd reality when it requires a plane to move data from one place to another. It’s not necessary to move terabytes of data all day, all night. Moving hard drives across the continent for a feature film is different from pulling in data to analyze and then presenting in an application. But the loads will have to get heavier  with the connectivity of smartphones, the invisible geofence around your house, 3-D printers and the endless variety of data objects available to aggregate and analyze. In applications, the complexity of moving data is requiring new ways to use Flash and RAM. Hard drives are outdated, their mechanical parts not capable of keeping up with the volume and velocity of data that companies are analyzing. New databases are emerging. Startups and large companies like SAP are developing in-memory databases. ...

Even Better In-Browser Mockups with Node.js

Designing in the browser has all sorts of benefits, like producing more accurate, comprehensive results and removing the extra step of converting from image file to markup and CSS. But even sites designed in a browser still require pasting in content, faking interactions with the server, and creating placeholder JavaScript that isn’t usable on the live site. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could go from just designing layouts and interactions to designing the whole client side of the application during the same process? This is where Node comes in. Node.js is a server-side JavaScript platform. It isn’t a web server, but it allows you to easily create one. It also lets you create utilities that run on web servers, like setup and minification utilities and general-purpose command line tools. Node started in 2009 and generated considerable interest, probably because it gave JavaScript developers an opportunity to write server-side code even if they lacked a server-side background. It didn’t ...

Hillsborough County (FL) Hackathon is a Sign of Increasing Tech Awareness (Video

The idea of the Hackathon was to develop either Web or mobile applications that would dovetail with county services and be useful for county workers, county residents or both. The winners got cash prizes, but many people on the nine competing teams weren't aware of them until the closing awards ceremony when the three winners were announced. But then, this is a helpful part of the country where, if an old person falls down on the sidewalk, strangers will rush to her side, whip out cell phones in case a 911 call is needed, and help her to her feet. A hackathon to benefit your neighbors is nothing but an extension of that spirit. One note: Several county employees said this was the first-ever government-organized hackathon around here, but there was a Tampa Mayor's Hackathon last June, and Tampa is the biggest city in Hillsborough County. But this is all good, and Hillsborough hopes to hold a bigger (and hopefully better-publicized) hackathon next year. Meanwhile, there are more home-grown ...
