Mobile Wallet Kuapay Gets An Upgrade, Reaches 600 Locations Through Trials With KFC & Others
Kuapay, a startup offering a consumer mobile wallet application and accompanying loyalty platform for merchants, is rolling out an upgraded version of its mobile app today which focuses on improved speed, security and a new user interface which makes it easier for users to track their credit card details as well as discover nearby local merchants who support the Kuapay service. Based in Santa Monica, California, the company was founded in 2011 by Joaquin Ayuso de Paul, previously the co-founder of Tuenti, which sold to Telefonica for $100 million. The company uses an interesting combination of QR codes. barcodes, NFC or manual entry, any of which can be used at point-of-sale as an alternative to the credit card swipe. For security purposes, the app doesn’t actually transmit the credit card information between the phone and the register – instead, the company integrates with POS systems like NCR, Micros, Aloha and others to complete the purchases. TabbedOut Scores Deal With Point-Of-Sale Maker, Will Allow Customers To Pay Their Restaurant Or Bar Tab Via Their Phone At 10,000 Locations

Tabbedout, a startup backed by $5.75 million from NEA and others, has been developing a platform that allows bar and restaurant customers to pay for their tab using their smartphone. Today, the company is announcing a partnership with Point-of-Sale (POS) system maker Harbortouch which will allow it to sizably increase its footprint in the space. The two companies have joined forces to deliver an integrated solution that’s being installed on all the new Harbortouch Hospitality POS deployments in the future, as well as integrated into existing terminals. The vendor has a presence in over 10,000 locations across the U.S. Though to the consumer, it may seem like it should be simple enough to just start paying for things in the offline world with your phone, there’s a reason why no entity has yet to establish itself as a leading mobile wallet application yet.
