Intel's Q1 2013 Meets Revenue Expectations At $12.6B, Misses On EPS At $0.40 As PC Market Slows

Intel’s fiscal Q1 earnings are out today, and the company reported profit and earnings at expectations on revenue with $12.6 billion for the quarter, and below on earnings per share at $0.40, according to Bloomberg’s analyst consensus. Revenue was down from Q1 2012, as were earnings per share, as the chip-making giant continues to weather the storm of a declining PC market. PC sales for the beginning of the year were reportedly steep, according to research firm IDC, with Windows 8 taking blame for the decline. IDC found that overall, sales were down 13.9 percent for PCs, a category which excludes tablets and notebooks with removable keyboards. Even if you count those in, the news still wouldn’t be great for Intel, which continues to struggle with making any real headway in the mobile processor market. The PC group’s revenue alone totaled only $8 billion, down nearly 6 percent year over year. Intel said in a statement from the CFO’s office that the sequential decline in overall ...

As Windows RT Flounders, Intel Bets Big On Windows 8 And Android Tablets With Quad-Core Atom SoCs

As Intel goes so goes Windows 8. The chip maker just unveiled its roadmap for Window 8 tablets. At the core will be the latest generation of Atom processors: quad-core architecture at a 22nm size. Intel calls it the Bay Trail and expects to see it within shipping hardware in late 2013 -- including Android tablets.

Info On Intel Bay Trail 22nm Atom Platform Shows Out-of-Order Design

MojoKid writes "New leaked info from Intel sheds light on how the company's 2014 platforms will challenge ARM products in the ultra light, low power market. At present, the company's efforts in the segment are anchored by Cedar Trail, the 32nm dual-core platform that launched a year ago. To date, all of Intel's platform updates for Atom have focused on lowering power consumption and ramping SoC integration rather than focusing on performance — but Bay Trail will change that. Bay Trail moves Atom to a quad-core, 22nm, out-of-order design. It significantly accelerates the CPU core with burst modes of up to 2.7GHz, and it'll be the first Atom to feature Intel's own graphics processor instead of a licensed core from Imagination Technologies."

Intel Details Power Management Advancements in Haswell

MojoKid writes "Intel's next-generation CPU architecture, codenamed Haswell, puts heavy emphasis on reducing power consumption. Pushing Haswell down to a 10W TDP is an achievement, but hitting these targets requires collaboration. Haswell will offer finer-grained control over areas of logic that were previously either on or off, up to and including specific execution units. These optimizations are impressive, particularly the fact that idle CPU power is approaching tablet levels, but they're only part of the story. Operating system changes matter as well, and Intel has teamed up with Microsoft to ensure that Windows 8 takes advantage of current and future hardware. Haswell's 10W target will allow the chip to squeeze into many of the convertible laptop/tablet form factors on display at IDF, while Bay Trail, the 22nm, out-of-order successor to Clover Trail, arrives in 2013 as well. Not to mention the company's demonstration of the first integrated digital WiFi radio. Folks have been trading ...
