Placed Insights Debuts, Bringing ComScore-Like Analytics & Ratings To The Physical World
Madrona-backed location analytics startup Placed is today launching Placed Insights, a ratings service for real world locations which has been in development over the past two years. The system is designed to bring a web analytic-like offering to offline locations, or as CEO David Shim puts it: “what Nielsen has done for TV, and comScore has done for offline, Placed has accomplished for the physical world,” as he explains. Like the above firms he references, Placed Insights also measures activity using data from panelists who have agreed to share their location on their mobile phones. The system works in apps which request access to users’ location data. Though, arguably some users may not read or understand permissions dialog boxes, at the end of the day, it’s on users to protect their location privacy. Amazon's AWS Expands Redshift Data Warehousing And EC2 High Storage To Europe
Amazon's business model, CTO Werner Vogels reminded us today, is based on "low margins and high volume", and today the company announced a development on how it's applying that principle to its enterprise services. From today, it's expanding to Europe its Redshift data warehousing service and its EC2 High Storage service. Redshift, Amazon's petabyte-scale solution to better manage huge backlogs of data, was first announced in November 2012. The news of the international expansation was made this morning during the Amazon Web Services Summit in London today, part of a wider roadshow for AWS.

More developments on the grim story of ST-Ericsson, the unprofitable JV between Ericsson and STMicroelectronics that tried to kickstart a semiconductor business in Europe. Failing to find a buyer for the full operation, they will commence splitting up the assets instead, laying off 1,600 employees in the process.

Network Effect: SingTel-Owned Amobee Expands Mobile Ad Platform To Cover Its Globe, Optus And Telkomsel Holdings
When the pan-Asian mobile carrier SingTel paid $321 million to acquire mobile ad platform SingTel in May last year, the thinking was that the Singapore-based SingTel could use Amobee to serve targeted ads to its 480-million mobile subscriber base across the region. Some eight months after the deal has closed, that network effect is coming into play: today Amobee is announcing that it will take over all mobile ads for SingTel, as well as Globe in the Philippines, Optus in Australia and New Zealand and Telkomsel in Indonesia. The deal is exclusive and will mean that all four carriers will be served ads through Amobee’s PULSE mobile ad platform — which was initially developed by Amobee in California but has since been integrated into SingTel’s servers in the Asia-Pacific region. Initially, this deal will cover 200 million users, Amobee says, but will be extended out to eventually cover all of SingTel’s 480 million subscribers. Overall, SingTel is active in 20 countries.
