Foursquare Redesigns Its Venue Pages For The Web To Capitalize On Its 50M Monthly Unique Visitors

Foursquare recently raised another round of funding, with the announcement coming just a few days after it released its latest iOS app redesign. Today, the company has launched redesigned venue pages, to fit in with what they did last year on the web with its homepage, focusing on explore and discover functionality. The changes are to capitalize on the traffic that Foursquare gets from its now #1 referrer on the web, Google, which traffic has doubled from over the past year. This is an important play for Foursquare, as its competing with Google’s own Local product, Yelp….and it seems like Facebook too, after its redesign today for local business pages. Foursquare’s lead engineer for the web, Mike Singleton, told me that the site now gets over 50M unique visitors on the web, which is 17M more than actually use its app. That means that Foursquare is quietly breaking through as a place for information about venues, its most prized asset: People are coming from Google for different reasons, ...

In A Play For More HTML5 Muscle, Intel Buys appMobi’s HTML5 Developer Tools, Leaving appMobi To Focus On The Cloud

Intel will not be left out of the party when it comes to being central in the mobile app ecosystem. The company today acquired a set of HTML5 development tools, originally created by appMobi and used by some 150,000 developers, and has hired staff from appMobi that worked on the product to continue to maintain it. appMobi, meanwhile, is going to forge ahead as a standalone company, focused on the remaining part of its business as a provider of cloud services for mobile applications. New WD TV Play Streaming Box Lets Users Watch Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, And Their Own Media For Just $69

WD is no stranger to making media streaming devices — it’s been in the business for several years, most notably with its WDTV Live and WDTV Live Hub products. But those devices both are priced at $99 and above, with the Hub also including built-in media storage. The new WD TV Play, by contrast, is focused on the lower end of the market, with a $69 price tag and a number of streaming services already lined up. The box streams video from online providers such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Vudu, Spotify, SlingPlayer, Pandora, and Facebook, among others. In that sense, the new device gets to leverage all of the content that WD had added to its previous streaming boxes. It also provides users with the ability to access and stream their own media at home, whether it be photos, video, or music. It does that by connecting to DLNA-compliant computers or network-attached storage on the same WiFi network, as well as allowing users to plug in digital cameras or external hard drives through a USB ...

When you think about the process of getting someone a gift card, it’s kind of ridiculous. You go to a store, you take out your credit card, pay for it and then hand it to a friend. That’s the gist of it, and it’s a slow process. Right now, this just works for folks in the United States. Best part is you don’t have to go to that physical store and take out your credit card. It just works. Translation is UX

Je ne suis pas monsieur Lebowski. C’est vous monsieur Lebowski. Moi, je suis le Duc. — The Big Lebowski , French version There is a world where Harry Potter’s arch enemy is “Du-weißt-schon-wer,” Facebook users click the “Me gusta” button, and the Dude is named “le Duc.” This world is a translated world. We—the people who make websites—now study almost every aspect of our trade, from content and usability to art direction and typography. Our attention to detail has never been greater as we strive to provide the best possible experience. Yet many users still experience products that lack personality or are difficult to understand. They are users of a translated version. When we pledge to embrace the adaptable nature of the web—to make our websites responsive and even future-ready—we’re typically talking about diversity of devices. But the web’s diversity also comes in the form of different languages and cultures. Translation affects users’ experiences—and ...
