Square Hires Former Google SMB Of Global Sales and Operations, Francoise Brougher, As Business Lead
Square has announced the hiring of a new Business Lead, Francoise Brougher, and she comes straight from spending eight years at Google. For the past three years, Brougher held the title of SMB Global Sales and Operations for the online advertising unit at Google. Although Square has grown its footprint considerably, in part because of its high-profile partnership with Starbucks, the company has yet to announce its plans to address the international market. Today, the service is only available in the U.S. and Canada, which has allowed a plethora of competitors to thrive overseas, especially in European markets where companies like iZettle, SumUp,Payleven, mPowa and Intuit have already launched. Here’s what Square co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey had to say about the hiring: Francoise is a perfect fit for Square. Her accomplishments in growing and managing large, global teams, and her focus on building simple, scalable solutions that empower millions of people, will have a huge impact ...

Fancy 6 Months Free In The Italian Alps Building Startups? Check Out TechPeaks
A new kind of tech accelerator has launched in one of the more unlikely places: the Italian Alps. TechPeaks (see what they did there?) calls itself a "People Accelerator" because individuals and teams will be able to join it without an idea but a desire to build something. It will launch with €13 million in funding. It's also taking more of a partnership rather than competitive approach, working with seven Technology Universities (via the European Institute of Innovation and Technology ICT Labs) and seven other international tech accelerators, listed here. The idea is to help unite the many fragmented European tech initiatives. And oh my are they are fragmented.

Facebook Isn't Holding Back Their Growth: MessageMe Raises $1.9M And Grabs 1M Users
MessageMe, the multimedia messaging app that got smacked by Facebook last week, isn’t letting that hurdle set back their growth. The company said today that it has more than 1 million users, is sending 500 notifications now per second and recently picked up $1.9 million in funding from a large syndicate of some of the Valley’s best-known investors. They include True Ventures, First Round Capital, Google Ventures, SVAngel, Resolut.vc, Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock Partners and Social+Capital Partnership. The company’s angels also include Airbnb’s Brian Pokorny, Hiten Shah, Eric Wu and TinyCo CEO Suleman Ali. While the messaging space is incredibly competitive with apps from Facebook, Apple’s iMessages plus the big Asian clients like Tencent’s WeChat and NHN’s Line, MessageMe thinks it can carve out a space because of the way it quickly pulls in rich media like doodles and videos. Basically, they think it’s a lot more expressive than standard messaging and silly as it seems, ...
