Angry Birds-Maker Rovio Picks Up A New COO In Nokia Veteran Teemu Suila
Rovio is continuing to cycle in new executive level management with Nokia veteran Teemu Suila taking over as chief operating officer after former COO Harri Koponen stepped down after about two years in the role. Koponen is moving on to do business development for the main investment company behind Rovio, presumably controlled by chairman Kaj Hed, who is the father of CEO Mikael Hed and owns and 70 percent of the company. Koponen isn’t the only longtime senior exec at Rovio to move on in recent months. They also recently brought on a new executive vice president of games in Digital Chocolate’s Jami Laes after Petri Järvilehto also moved on. Järvilehto is taking time off. Another Rovio SVP of brand marketing, Ville Heijari, also recently went to gaming monetization network Playhaven. I’ve reached out to Rovio to get more background on the moves. The new COO Suila used to oversee startup activities and corporate strategy at Nokia after working for the Finnish handset maker for almost ...
British Foreign Secretary on Surveillance Worries: '"Law Abiding Citizens Have Nothing To Fear"
Bruce66423 writes "The government minister in charge of GCHQ, the UK's equivalent of the NSA, has used those immortal words, 'Only terrorists, criminals and spies should fear secret activities of the British and US intelligence agencies.' From the article: '...In an interview on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, Mr Hague refused to say whether the British government knew of the existence of Prism before it emerged last week. “I can’t confirm or deny in public what Britain knows about and what Britain doesn’t, for obvious reasons,” he said. However, he implied that the revelations had not taken him by surprise.'" While many are concerned about the reach of PRISM overseas, the Finnish Foreign Minister says he plans to continue using Outlook for email.
Valkee, The Profitable Startup That Shines Lights Through Your Ears, Raises $9.7M
Valkee, the Finnish company that built a contraption that shines lights through your ear canals to treat seasonal affective disorder, closed $9.7 million in funding from current and new investors. Beyond the ones that were already revealed last year like Finland’s Lifeline Ventures, Esther Dyson, Jaiku and Ditto co-founder Jyri Engestrom and former EA EVP Kristian Segerstrale, the company isn’t sharing the identities of its new investors. While Valkee’s product does sound a bit wacky, it’s backed by research from the company’s co-founder Juuso Nissila. While studying the circadian rhythms of birds up in the way, way north of Finland in Oulo, he found that there were light-sensitive proteins on the surface of these animals’ brains that could help regulate their sleep schedules. He wondered if the same photo-sensitivity could be found in human brains. He partnered with a longtime Nokia researcher Antti Auino and built the Valkee, which looks like an MP3 player with a set of fancy ...
