6 Experts on Speeding Up Data
Speed. That’s what it’s all about these days. The problem: it’s still more effective to use FedEx than trying to squeeze a data load across a network. It’s an absurd reality when it requires a plane to move data from one place to another. It’s not necessary to move terabytes of data all day, all night. Moving hard drives across the continent for a feature film is different from pulling in data to analyze and then presenting in an application. But the loads will have to get heavier with the connectivity of smartphones, the invisible geofence around your house, 3-D printers and the endless variety of data objects available to aggregate and analyze. In applications, the complexity of moving data is requiring new ways to use Flash and RAM. Hard drives are outdated, their mechanical parts not capable of keeping up with the volume and velocity of data that companies are analyzing. New databases are emerging. Startups and large companies like SAP are developing in-memory databases. ...

Zuckerberg's Lobby Can't Stay Silent On Secretive Conservative Political Ads Forever
Online backlash is growing against Mark Zuckerberg’s lobby’s secretive ads supporting conservative senators who encourage the creation of the Keystone XL pipeline and drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. “Immigration reform – fine. Oil expansion and pipelines? NOT fine. Where’s the transparency here, rich dudes? Or does FWD actually stand for Fine With Drilling?,” wrote one angry commenter on the FWD.us Facebook page. FWD.us is the latest A-list technology political interest group to come out swinging for high-skilled immigration reform. Partnering with many of Silicon Valley’s brightest luminaries, from Google Chairman Eric Schmidt to Bill Gates, FWD.us made a very public debut last week, promising grassroots activism in support of knowledge-economy-friendly policymaking. FWD.us strategically splits its operation into democratic and conservative outreach, directly funding ads of senators friendly to high-skilled immigration reform. The Internet rumor machine spun an ad ...

BuzzFeed's Jonah Peretti Explains If You Don't Like Cute Animal Pics (Hence BuzzFeed), You're Not Human
I want to marry Jonah Peretti. Why? Because he just found a way to rationalize why we look at hundreds of pictures of kittens each day on the Internet during his keynote at TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013. “Cats on the web aren’t about the cats,” said Peretti. “It’s about being human.” Pictures of kittens, and dogs on their hind legs, and baby monkeys and teacup piggies are adorable. Duh. But it’s not about cuteness. Our obsession with photos of animals comes down to our humanity, he explained. The reason we choose to buy and sell dogs and cats and keep them in our homes, feed them, and speak to them like they’re human counterparts is because we see a small piece of ourselves in them. They are alive, they feel, they see and hear and smell. They get hungry. They get happy and they get sad. In the end, animals elicit an emotional reaction, whether we like it or not, because we can relate to them. Peretti explained that emotion is part of being a human, and if you don’t feel emotion, ...

Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley: All Our Numbers Are Up 10-30% Each Month
Today at Disrupt NY 2013, Foursquare founder and CEO Dennis Crowley denied rumors that growth was stagnant for Foursquare. “I think there’s a little bit of perception that we’re not growing,” Crowley said. ”This is false.” In reality, March 2013 was the best month to date. When it comes to growth numbers, Crowley started by saying that “[they] don’t talk about growth numbers so much.” But Foursquare tracks the number of active users, monthly sign-ups, check-ins, web visitors, etc. “All of these numbers are up 10-30 percent,” Crowley said. Yet, Crowley was very candid about the situation the company is in right now. “We’re not the shiny new thing anymore,” he said. The company is currently trying to become the main location tech company and turn into a recommendation app for restaurants, bars, etc. “A lot of people understand what we’re trying to do, being the location layer on the Internet, but there are a lot of people that don’t,” Crowley said. “People ...
