Yahoo Partners With Twitter To Further Personalize Homepage Newsfeed
Yahoo and Twitter have partnered to bring tweets directly into Yahoo homepage’s newsfeed on web and mobile, the company announced this morning. The move follows a relaunch of the front page back in February of this year. At the time, the company debuted a redesigned site with an increased emphasis on personalization, as well as a more modern design. The Twitter partnership expands upon this earlier mission involving personalization – a key focus for Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer – noting that Yahoo will now ”seamlessly include relevant and personalized tweets alongside stories from Yahoo! and our other sources.” These tweets will now appear directly in the Yahoo news feed, which offers an endlessly scrollable stream of content, divided into sections like “All Stories,” “News,” “Local,” “Entertainment,” “Sports,” and more. The headlines which come from Twitter accounts will be indicated by referencing the source by its Twitter handle (e.g. “@ABCWorldNews” ...

With New Service, Any Device Could Run Almost Any Program From Anywhere
In the near future, the only difference between a smartphone, tablet, and a laptop will be the size of the screen. Hardcore gamers could play 3D intensive games in a smartphone, and Michael Bay could render “Transformers 4? from his iPad. Otoy, an LA-based software company, has discovered a way to stream any application to any device, completely through a web browser. It’s difficult to overestimate the potential disruptiveness of Otoy, as a breakthrough streaming service could, in the near future, end the need for app stores and computer upgrades (see a demo below). Otoy has a habit of impressing the tech press with its surprising ability to stream 3D intensive graphics to devices that shouldn’t be able to run them. Since Otoy’s 2009 demo, there’s been a rush of companies in the ever more crowded “cloud” services industry, such as Onlive’s streaming video gaming. Up until now, video games were shackled to certain consoles, mobile apps to particular app stores, and software ...

Tumblr Updates Its iOS App With More Sharing Features & GIFs That Actually Animate
Tumblr has updated its iOS application for iPhone and iPad with new sharing options and other features – a move which follows yesterday’s launch of Tumblr for Windows Phone. Unfortunately, however, the iOS version didn’t get the fancy new, almost Path-like animations the Android version received earlier this month. So yeah, the Android version is currently the better application. Surprise! Okay, that’s a subjective call, I’ll admit. But I rather like the now-trendy, little, round buttons in the Tumblr Android version, which pop out when you tap the “compose” option. And no, I don’t care if everyone is doing round now. Besides, only hipsters will whine about Tumblr copying Path at this point anyway. As for today’s iOS enhancements, the company touts the release as offering you tools that let you “do more than just reblog.” Specifically, you can share to Twitter and Facebook, save items in Instapaper and Pocket, email posts in a templated format, and more. A couple of ...

YC-Backed Kippt, An “Evernote For The Web”, Lures Developers With New API, App Gallery
Kippt, which lets you collect and share content from across the web, is looking to attract developers with a brand-new API and gallery of apps. The two-person startup has relied on outside developers to have a mobile presence on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Kippt just returned to San Francisco from Helsinki, almost a year after graduating from Y Combinator’s summer batch. “An API is not only good for us, but it’s good for our users,” said Karri Saarinen, who co-founded Kippt and leads design. “There are some companies that fear this kind of openness will somehow harm the company, but we feel it brings value.” He pointed to more than a dozen third-party apps that bring Kippt to the iPhone or turn it into an elegant mobile reading list. Popular reading app Pocket added support for Kippt recently, too. Saarinen said that some developers have already organized hack days around the API. It’s steady progress for the product, which started as a side project while Kippt’s other ...

Twitter Redesigns Its Search Experience For iOS, Android And Mobile Web To Help You Find Relevant Tweets And People
Twitter has announced a much-needed update to its search product today and it will be available on all mobile devices: iOS, Android and mobile web. The company boasts that the update will help you find relevant tweets, trends and people to follow in a single stream. This is very similar to the experience that we’re starting to see make its way to the website. Among the most interesting changes is that you can now search from anywhere in the app, instead of having to tap over to discover. You’ll see this button for the iOS version. Up until now, “Interactions” has been an option for reviewing the connected tab, which displays all of your replies, that is now the default. All of these changes are to engage people more on Twitter, whether they’re heavy sharers or not. In the past, the company has said that you don’t have to tweet to use Twitter. That’s partially true, but if people find things that interest them, they’ll engage a little bit more. Whether it’s a reply or an ...
