Betaworks Acquires And Relaunches Hownow, The Semi-Anonymous Hyperlocal Social Network iPhone App

On one end of the spectrum, networks like Twitter and Facebook have acted as catalysts to organizing events like the Arab Spring or the riots of London. On the other end of that spectrum, networks like Yelp or Foursquare tee up user generated reviews, tips and public-facing profiles. Somewhere in between all that falls hownow, an iPhone app-based social network that lets users publish messages semi-anonymously at a hyperlocal level.

Yahoo Partners With Twitter To Further Personalize Homepage Newsfeed

Yahoo and Twitter have partnered to bring tweets directly into Yahoo homepage’s newsfeed on web and mobile, the company announced this morning. The move follows a relaunch of the front page back in February of this year. At the time, the company debuted a redesigned site with an increased emphasis on personalization, as well as a more modern design. The Twitter partnership expands upon this earlier mission involving personalization – a key focus for Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer – noting that Yahoo will now ”seamlessly include relevant and personalized tweets alongside stories from Yahoo! and our other sources.” These tweets will now appear directly in the Yahoo news feed, which offers an endlessly scrollable stream of content, divided into sections like “All Stories,” “News,” “Local,” “Entertainment,” “Sports,” and more. The headlines which come from Twitter accounts will be indicated by referencing the source by its Twitter handle (e.g. “@ABCWorldNews” ...

Nokia Teases New Lumia's Camera In Prime Time TV Ad, Ahead Of “See What's Next” London Event On Tuesday

Nokia has run a TV advert teasing a new Lumia device it’s widely expected to unveil at an event in London on Tuesday. The advert ran during a prime time evening slot on Channel 4, during a screening of The Inbetweeners movie. The teaser advert focused on the camera of an unnamed new Lumia smartphone, with close up shots of the lens and flash, and the words “more than your eyes can see” and “the new Nokia Lumia is coming”. Nokia sent out invites to “see what’s next” as “the Lumia story continues” last month, ahead of the May 14th event. Last week the mobile maker unveiled a new flagship smartphone for the U.S. on Verizon, unboxing the Lumia 928 — a device that had been widely leaked ahead of its official launch, including by Nokia who published a camera comparison with the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5. It also took the wraps off an update to its Asha range: the Series 40-based $99 Asha 501 is the first device to run Nokia’s new Asha touchscreen UI. With recent updates at ...

WPP CEO Sorrell: Google Will Overtake News Corp As Our Largest Media Investment This Year Or Next

Martin Sorrell, the CEO of WPP, today laid out a stark picture of how significant a role digital is playing for the advertising giant. Speaking at the FT Digital Media Conference in London today, he said that digital now accounts for 34% of WPP’s media investment, amounting to some $72 billion, rising “from zero to over one-third in about ten years, the age of Google,” he said. Google, he said, is the second-largest recipient of that digital spend at the moment, at around $2 billion for the quarter, but that it will soon overtake the single biggest beneficiary at the moment, News Corp. Sorrell described Google as “a media owner masquerading as a tech company.” Sorrell referred to these numbers as a preview of WPP’s quarterly results, which are out tomorrow. He added that at the moment AOL and Yahoo are each getting around $400 million to $500 million in ad spend via WPP. Facebook, despite its size and current popularity, is only around $270 million. Twitter, he added, is “much ...

Tumblr Updates Its iOS App With More Sharing Features & GIFs That Actually Animate

Tumblr has updated its iOS application for iPhone and iPad with new sharing options and other features – a move which follows yesterday’s launch of Tumblr for Windows Phone. Unfortunately, however, the iOS version didn’t get the fancy new, almost Path-like animations the Android version received earlier this month. So yeah, the Android version is currently the better application. Surprise! Okay, that’s a subjective call, I’ll admit. But I rather like the now-trendy, little, round buttons in the Tumblr Android version, which pop out when you tap the “compose” option. And no, I don’t care if everyone is doing round now. Besides, only hipsters will whine about Tumblr copying Path at this point anyway. As for today’s iOS enhancements, the company touts the release as offering you tools that let you “do more than just reblog.” Specifically, you can share to Twitter and Facebook, save items in Instapaper and Pocket, email posts in a templated format, and more. A couple of ...
