Rethinking Video Journalism, NowThisNews Blitzkriegs SXSW With Coverage And A 6-Second Pitch Competition
The TV news soundbite is about to get a lot shorter. NowThisNews, a New York-based startup that’s looking to reinvent video journalism for the Facebook and smartphone era, is hitting SXSW with an exclusive channel on its mobile app plus a six-second startup pitch competition using Twitter’s Vine. While we haven’t really covered the company before, NowThisNews is the brainchild of Huffington Post co-founder Kenneth Lerer, former Huffington Post CEO Eric Hippeau, and Bedrocket founder and CEO Brian Bedol. They’ve assembled a veteran team of journalists who have held senior positions at ABC News, CNN, Washington Post and The Huffington Post with $6.5 million in funding from investors including Lerer Ventures. The startup’s basic premise is this: because smartphones and tablets are eating into the time people otherwise spend watching TV, the old cable and evening news formats just don’t work. On top of that, news spreads in a different way — through social networks like Facebook ...

BlackJet, Your Own Private Airline, Adds San Francisco And Las Vegas As Destinations
BlackJet, which we’ve described as the “Uber for private jets” has announced San Francisco and Las Vegas as two new destinations. The company was founded by Garrett Camp, the co-founder of Uber, so it’s no surprise that the young company is already ramping up its coverage areas. What makes BlackJet so interesting is that the company has come up with a model to make private jets available to people at business class prices. If you’re flying from say, San Francisco to Los Angeles, why would you want to mess around with an airline when you could take a nice comfy private jet there? Much like Uber’s black cars, the company hopes that the answer is obvious to you. If you’re in San Francisco, you can attend the launch event for the new destinations along with us in Union Square, and BlackJet will be giving $2,500 memberships to its service to 1,000 lucky guests. You’ll be able to use the free membership, which comes with a complimentary companion site, to use within one year to ...

Location-Centric Mobile Ad Network Verve Closes $14M From Qualcomm, Nokia Growth Partners
Verve Mobile, an advertising network that focuses on delivering geo-fenced or geo-targeted ads, just picked up a third round of venture funding from Nokia Growth Partners and Qualcomm. BlueRun Ventures, an earlier investor that specializes in mobile deals, also participated in the $14 million round. That brings the company’s total funding to at least $21 million on top of a previous $7 million round from BlueRun. John Gardner from Nokia Growth Partners joins Verve’s board while Quinn Li from Qualcomm Ventures becomes a board observer. Verve’s network now reaches 108 million monthly uniques and has 6 billion monthly impressions. For comparison, Millennial Media — one of the few publicly traded mobile advertising companies — said it reached 380 million uniques in the third quarter of 2012, when it made $47.4 million in revenue. Verve says it has a special technology platform that makes geo-targeting easier. Advertisers can geo-fence their campaigns, or only run them in limited geographic ...
