Why Zuckerberg's Lobby Is Collapsing Like A House Of Cards Outside Of DC

“Power is a lot like real estate. It’s all about location, location, location.” — Frank Underwood, House of Cards At this very moment, Mark Zuckerberg’s political lobby, FWD.us, is probably taken aback at how reviled it has become, both from the public and its own members. After all, there are countless political technology lobbies, including Facebook’s own Political Action Committee, which routinely offer Republican candidates campaign cash for quid pro quo political favor. So, why, after discovering FWD.us indirectly supporting the controversial Keystone Pipeline initiative, have would-be supporters flooded their Facebook page with scathing comments, and its A-list supporters, such as Tesla’s Elon Musk, ditched the group? Unlike other lobbies, FWD.us burst on to the scene with a very public op-ed from its celebrity founder, promising to galvanize the latent civic passions of Silicon Vally’s netizens in a noble crusade to advance the knowledge society. While one hand extended ...

Tweet From Hacked AP Account Causes High Freq. Traders To Drop DOW 150 Points

New submitter Mike Lape writes "Stocks plunged and recovered within minutes after the hacked AP Twitter account sent out a tweet that indicated that the White House had been the victim of an explosion and that President Obama had been injured. '...the Dow Jones Industrial Average took a quick 143-point plunge, before recovering most of its losses within minutes. The three-minute plunge triggered by the tweet briefly wiped out $136.5 billion of the S&P 500 index's value, according to Reuters data. Interestingly, Tuesday has been the best day of the week for the blue-chip this year with an average return of 0.46 percent. If the index closes in the black today, it will have been up for the 15th consecutive Tuesday. The last time the Dow rose for 15 straight Tuesdays was in 1927.' An analyst said, 'That goes to show you how algorithms read headlines and create these automatic orders – you don't even have time to react as a human being.'"

Elon Musk Dares To Have A Political Opinion On Twitter

No more political comments for me now that I’ve shot off both my feet. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 9, 2013 Twitter is an extraordinary tool in so many ways. But, it’s a troll-lined black hole for civic dialogue. Last night, serial inventor Elon Musk dared to express a political opinion on Twitter and paid the price. “Always admired Margaret Thatcher — she was tough, but sensible & fair, much like my English Nana,” he tweeted. @elonmusk god motherfucker, you just lost some serious cool points. — Tice Estes (@ticeestes) April 9, 2013 While the reaction to Musk was relatively tame, compared to the usual firestorm of epithets and Hitler-themed accusations, the utter lack of informed dialogue does not spell good things for the future of democracy and social media. For instance, when former Ms. teen heartthrob Melissa Joan Hart expressed an ounce of positivity towards Republican candidate, Mitt Romney, she was inundated with vicious insults: Which, was in response to this thoughtful ...
